Following the recent earthquake in Cebu City, a wave of kindness rose among the people. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northern Cebu, particularly near Bogo City, where the epicenter was located, according to PHIVOLCS. Volunteers from different schools, organizations, and communities gathered in Cebu Provincial Capitol Grounds to repack relief goods for the most affected families.
The atmosphere inside the area was filled with a strong desire to help. Boxes of canned goods, noodles, bottled water, rice and other health kits surrounded the volunteers, who are composed of students, teachers, organizations, and even local residents. According to ABS-CBN News, the Department of Social Welfare and Development distributed over 158,000 family food packs in areas across Cebu as of October 5, 2025 —thanks to the numerous volunteers, who worked non-stop. Every hand that help shared a common goal: to bring hope and comfort to those in need.
For 19-year-old Maddy Delos Reyes from Talisay City College, the experience was both meaningful and inspiring.
“While volunteering, I felt really happy and thankful because I knew I was doing something meaningful for others, knowing that even small efforts can make a big difference,” she shared.
“The experience made me realize how rewarding it is to give your time and effort without expecting anything in return.”
Her words reflect the spirit of every people who joined the cause.
During the time of disaster, people in Cebu City united together to help and lift one another. The earthquake may have caused fear and destruction, but Cebuanos showed that they can stand stronger than any shaking ground.
