Even Machines Need Rest

✍︎ Jayson Acabo

Have you ever experienced being awake past midnight, sitting and staring at a textbook—too tired to learn, yet too guilty to sleep?

We live in a culture where a person’s value is measured by their productivity, career status, or what they have already achieved in life. Because of this relentless pressure to remain productive and successful, we begin to feel guilty whenever we are not doing something “useful.” It starts to feel like you are only allowed to rest once you have pushed yourself to your limit.

Even the most advanced machines require downtime for maintenance, cooling, and software updates to prevent total system failure. Yet, we often expect our minds to run endlessly without pause. Your body is not a machine; it is a living system. While a machine can be replaced when it breaks from overuse, you cannot. Rest is a biological necessity, not a reward you have to earn. It is not lazy or selfish to stop—it is essential.

You rest because you need it, not just because you have decided you have worked hard enough.

Do not be too harsh on yourself. Take a moment to breathe and remember that we are only human. Rest is the fuel that allows us to remain productive—it is the foundation that helps us keep moving forward.
