HALA LINOG NASAD: ATTENDANCE OVER SEISMIC THREATS

✍︎ Ashley Mae Ponce

The challenge of requiring continuous student attendance despite recurring seismic activity presents a clear conflict between educational duty and fundamental safety. The operational decisions made by school administrators and local authorities face scrutiny when structural vulnerability is a known factor. When school facilities, many of which may be older, continue daily operation without visible seismic safety improvements, the system unintentionally places a significant emotional and physical risk on its young population. This reality necessitates an urgent discussion: At what point does the crucial pursuit of academic fulfillment necessitate a pause to guarantee the basic well-being of all learners?

The impact of this environmental instability is the resulting psychological burden carried by the student body. Minor tremors now trigger immediate and intense anxiety, crystallizing in the heart-wrenching, internalized question, “Hala linog nasad?” . This hyper-vigilance is more than just situational stress; it represents a pervasive trauma that continually compromises their ability to concentrate, retain information, and thrive academically. Forcing students to operate under this sustained duress, where their learning environment is inextricably linked to a sense of impending disaster, is an unseen but substantial obstacle to their educational success.

Despite these overwhelming circumstances, the students demonstrate extraordinary tenacity, continuing to fulfill their duties, participate actively, and seek knowledge. Their resilience is deeply admirable, yet it must not be used to justify the continuation of hazardous conditions. School leadership and local authorities hold the primary responsibility to act decisively. Their focus must shift from merely acknowledging student bravery to investing in tangible safety measures: robust infrastructure retrofitting, transparent emergency protocols, and accessible, immediate psychological support. The educational system’s core mandate is to foster growth, a goal that can only be ethically achieved in an environment of unquestionable security, where students does not have to ask while stopping, feeling the ground, and asking the question, “Ka feel mo, murag ni uyog lagi?”.
