In the world of fungi, one species stands out not only for its striking colors but also for its surprising medical benefits. Laetiporus sulphureus, also known as the “chicken of the woods,” is a bright orange-yellow fungus that grows on hardwood trees. While it is famous for its chicken-like texture and taste, researchers have found that this fungus holds powerful properties that could help in the field of medicine.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide with more than 10 million deaths in 2020. To help cool down the deaths caused by cancer, several studies show that certain mushrooms have extraordinary effects on people dealing with various types of cancer.
Research by Iwon Adamska shows that Laetiporus sulphureus contains natural compounds with antioxidant and antibacterial properties which may help protect and fight harmful bacteria from our body. Because of these features, scientists are exploring its possible use in food industry and medicine.
A report from the Food & Function Journal also confirmed that extracts from Laetiporus sulphureus can stop the growth of bacteria which are common causes of infection (Food & Function, 2014). Researchers added that the fungus could also be used in food preservation because of its natural antibacterial ability.
With these discoveries, Laetiporus sulphureus reminds us that nature continues to be a powerful source of healing. As researchers continue their studies regarding this “Chicken of the woods” may this be soon proved that even just a wild mushroom, a once simple organisms in nature might soon become a key to better health and sustainable medicines.
